Rusty Nelson, a university art professor on the verge of retirement, has had a remarkable journey. Despite his upbringing on a dry land wheat farm, Rusty’s passion for art blossomed thanks to the captivating illustrations in magazines and book covers. Supported by his parents and guided by an exceptional high school art teacher, he embraced his artistic talents and pursued art as his major in college.
Rusty’s versatility led him to graphic design, where he succeeded professionally in advertising. However, a longing for a career change beckoned him toward a different path.
Determined to make a difference, Rusty pursued a Master of Fine Arts degree, eventually achieving his goal of becoming a college art professor. For 25 years, he has been wholeheartedly dedicated to teaching graphic design, illustration, drawing, and 3D modeling and animation at Truman State University.
From his professional experience with and teaching illustration, Rusty’s love for watercolor painting grew. Now, exclusively working with transparent watercolor, he imparts his knowledge and techniques to his students.
As Rusty approaches retirement, his excitement knows no bounds. He envisions expanding his expertise in watercolor by developing online tutorials and courses for anyone, young or old, interested in learning how to draw and paint. Rusty extends an open invitation to join him on his journey through his YouTube channel, RNELSONARTS. Let’s embrace this opportunity to explore the captivating world of being creative together.
